Bonnaroo 2018: Is Chance The Rapper planning a return trip?

There's a bit to unpack from this recently tweeted statement from Chance the Rapper.

First of all, we've never heard anyone refer to the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, as "Bonbon." That's certainly what the hip-hop star is doing, as the tweet also includes a photo of him hanging out the festival's fountain.

But since Chance isn't on this year's Bonnaroo lineup, it also prompts the question: Why is he sharing this photo now? Is he simply feeling nostalgic as 'Roo season approaches? Or is he planning a return trip to the farm?

If we were talking about any other artist, that all might seem like a stretch. But with Chance, it’s definitely not. Here’s why

He’s Bonnaroo’s biggest booster

No music star has championed Bonnaroo like Chance. He has routinely attended Bonnaroo over the last five years — both as a performer and a fan — and has even spent significant time in the campgrounds and other common areas.

Ahead of his main stage performance at last year's festival, he'd gone down the water slide, made a cameo in the comedy tent and zipped around the service roads on a dirt bike.

"I'm not always booked here, but I love to come down here," he told his audience last year. "It's a beautiful weekend."

His tour schedule is wide open

Chance's tour schedule is wide open for the next two months. His next show isn't until August 18-19 in Osaka, Japan.

There’s been a high-profile cancellation

On Monday, rising rap group Brockhampton canceled all upcoming tour dates — including an appearance at Bonnaroo — due to numerous allegations of sexual misconduct concerning now-former member Ameer Vann.

The group was set to perform at 1:30 a.m. Saturday night/Sunday morning, which seems like a prime spot for a surprise performer to slip in.

Bonnaroo’s pinch-hitter history

Brockhampton weren't headliners, but a substantial chunk of Bonnaroo's young audience was clearly excited to see them. When high-profile cancellations happen at Bonnaroo, the festival has a track record of making a solid recovery.

The most famous incident occurred in 2013. Less than two days before their headlining appearance, Mumford and Sons had to cancel because of a medical emergency. Laid-back rocker Jack Johnson answered the call, rehearsed with a band in Nashville and took the stage on Saturday night.

Back in 2008, Southern rock greats The Allman Brothers Band also had to pull out of Bonnaroo because of health issues. Widespread Panic stepped in.

Keep your eyes peeled on the festival grounds next week. Bonnaroo — excuse us, "Bonbon" — takes place June 7-10.
